Healthful Living

Purpose

The intent of the Jones County Public Schools Healthful Living education program is to establish competency goals and objectives for the teaching and learning of behaviors that contribute to a healthful lifestyle and improved quality of life for all students. Healthful Living is a combination of health education and physical education. The two courses should complement each other. Students should experience a sequential educational program that will involve learning a variety of skills that enhance a person’s quality of life.

On June 25, 2009 the North Carolina legislature ratified into law the Healthy Youth Act of 2009 which modifies GS 115c(e1) the School Health Education Act. This Healthy Youth Act of 2009 redefines what is to be included in the human sexuality education component of health education instruction in North Carolina’s 7th, 8th, and High School health education classrooms. The law is effective at the beginning of the school year 2010-2011. Students in grades 7 and 8 and high school education classes will have the opportunity to receive instruction, reflective of the guidelines under the Act, on reproductive health and safety education as part of the instruction students receive in their health education classes. Whole School Whole Child Whole Community Model
NC Healthy Schools focuses on improving the health of students and staff by providing coordination and resources within the context of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. The goal is to create students who are healthier, in school, in class, and ready to learn. The impact of this approach improves outcomes for our schools, our community and our student's futures.
