Fruit Trees for Jones Senior
 Winners of Fruit Tree Grant

A Bright Ideas grant won with the help of Mr. Sutton, Mrs.Paige-Jones,  Mr. Lewis, Mr. Guy Smith, Ms. Amy Sauls, and Ms. Betty Murphrey brings fruit trees to Jones Senior HIgh School.  Included in the purchase are Apple, Pear, Peach, Fig, and Plum trees.  The benefit of these plantings will increase over the years as students study the development of fruit trees, study insect problems, and use the fruit for various lessons.

Students from Mr. Sutton and Mr. Lewis’s classes planted the trees earlier this spring.  In the process, they learned about preparing the soil and planting fruit trees. Recently, these students received lessons on how much fertilizer to use with each tree and the use of cover such as pine straw to prevent weeds.

Just think, the school has its own fruit orchard!  What a great benefit to everyone.  Talk about a gift that keeps on giving.  This one really will.  More pictures.

 softball 2013

By: Amber Jones
The 2013 Jones Senior softball team is made up of eleven outstanding young ladies. The young team consists of only one Senior, Brittany Baugus, and one Junior, Margaret Dorsey.  The rest of the players are either Sophomore or Freshman.

Sophomore players include Southern Maready, Destini Tyson, Paige Hart, Brittany Jones, and Amber Jones. Freshmen include Cassidy Sutton, Holly Sutton, Megan Downs, and Madeline Baugus. infield men are Brittany Baugus (pitcher), Holly Sutton (catcher), Southern Maready (first baseman), Brittany Jones (second baseman), Cassidy Sutton (short-stop), and Amber Jones (third baseman).  The team has played exceptionally well for a young team.

With seven great wins this year, the softball team places 1-2 in conference. The team works as one to take advantage of each other’s strengths. One of the funniest, yet most exciting moments of the year happened during the game against Eastern Wayne when a pop fly hit between center field and second base. Our shortstop Cassidy Sutton calls the ball and catches it. The third base runner tags up and runs for home plate trying to steal a run, Cassidy Sutton sees the runner and throws the ball to our catcher Holly Sutton.  Holly comes up to catch the ball and does a superman jump tagging the runner just before they get to the plate taking that extra run from them and getting the third out all at the same time. That ended the ending.  Then after a couple more good catches Jones Senior Trojans won that game.

We have had a great season so far this year, and we plan to keep it up. I believe we have a good chance of making it to state conference. More pictures of the softball team
