The New Common Core Curriculum and Essential Standards: North Carolina's New Curriculum Standards NC Department of Public Instruction’s new Common Core and Essential Standards are replacing current curriculum in every grade and every course in the state by the beginning of 2012-13 school year. Forty-six other states and several US territories are also adopting the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core Curriculum refers specifically to Math and English/Language Arts (ELA). The Essential Standards refer to the following subject areas: Science, Social Studies, Information and Technology, World Languages, Arts Education, Occupational Course of Study, Healthful Living, and Guidance. Knowing these changes were forthcoming, Jones County Schools administrators and teachers have been preparing for these changes for some time. During this school year we have completed indepth training during professional development sessions. We will be ready to implement the new curriculum beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. We are excited about the new curriculum changes and look forward to a smooth transition. We invite our parents and community members to become familiar with the new Common Core and Essential Standards.
