Originally from Fayetteville, NC; MSgt. Melvin Smith attended Pine Forest Sr. High School, where he actively participated in the AFJROTC program as a Drill Team Commander, FBLA Officer, Cross-Country Track Team, and as a Bus Driver. Upon graduation in 1978, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and after Basic Training/Technical School, he was assigned to the following locations Grand Forks AFB, ND in the HQ Missile Wing, Shaw AFB, SC (Mobility Squadron), SHAPE Belgium (NATO), Washington DC (Defense Intelligence Agency), and Maxwell AFB, Gunter Annex, AL (Superintendent, Executive Services). The Air Force afforded him to opportunity to travel and live in many exciting places and countries. MSgt. Smith, attended the following universities during his career; University of North Dakota, Park College, Central Texas College and Troy State University.
MSgt Smith earned his Bachelor of Education with a Major in Management Education from Concordia College.Upon his retirement in 1998, he came to Jones Senior as the Aerospace Science Instructor, where he has received the "Jones County Teacher of the Year-2005/2006" and recently awarded "Employee of the Month- Dec 2008". MSgt Smith in addition to his AFJROTC duties, is the Assistant Coach for the Varsity Football Team,works closely with the Athletic Department, and also serves as the focal point for School Bus Operations for the High School.
